Excellent country pubs and restaurants can be found within 2 miles and just 4 miles away is the pretty market town of Thirsk, host to the James Herriot Museum and Visitor Attraction situated in Kirkgate, you can step back in time to the days when this was not only home to Alf Wight, Thirsk's own author and vet, but a working veterinary practice. Thirsk also offers a good selection of shops, inns, tea rooms and quality takeaway restaurants. This is wonderful walking country - footpaths from the cottages lead to local villages and to the famous White Horse of Kilburn a well known landmark carved out of chalk in a hillside near the picturesque village of Kilburn.

The horse is 314' long and about 228' high and was the work of Thomas Taylor, a schoolmaster of Kilburn in 1857. The village of Kilburn is also home to the famous 'Mouseman' oak furniture makers. You can visit their showroom and visitor centre..

The cottages are ideally situated for visiting the North Yorkshire Moors, Dales and Coast and the famous historic walled city of York. Within a short drive you will discover a wealth of places to visit, suitable for all ages and tastes. There are many Stately Homes and Gardens to enjoy nearby including - Castle Howard, Duncombe Park, Beningborough Hall, Newburgh Priory, Newby Hall and Nunnington Hall. Monk Park Animal Farm and Bird of Prey Centre is only 2 miles away and well worth a visit, especially for younger visitors.  The North Yorks Moors Steam Railway is also well worth a visit as is the Eden Camp War Museum at Pickering. Beautiful Wensleydale and Swaledale are about  20 minutes away.  Theme parks can be found at Lightwater Valley, Ripon, and Flamingo Land , Kirbymoorside and are less than half an hour away. The delightful city of York is about a 20 minute drive from the cottages (using the very popular Park and Ride system) here you  can enjoy the many attractions including the famous York Minster, Yorvik Centre, National Railway Museum, Castle Museum, Museum Gardens, Boat Trip on the River Ouse, Open Top Bus Tour or Horse Drawn Carriage Tour around the City. You can now also take a ride on the recently added 'York Eye'. Shopping is also a real treat in York with its many quaint cobbled streets. Other local towns well worth visiting are the Spa town of Harrogate with its fabulous Stray Gardens and Harlow Carr Gardens, Helmsley which has its own castle, the pretty market towns of Knaresborough and Northallerton.  Walking, Riding,Golf, Fishing, Gliding, Clay Pigeon Shooting, 4 x 4 Driving Experience and Horseracing are all available within 10 minutes.
