Excellent country pubs and
restaurants can be found within 2 miles and just 4 miles away is the
pretty market town of Thirsk, host to the James Herriot Museum and
Visitor Attraction situated in Kirkgate, you can step back in time
to the days when this was not only home to Alf Wight, Thirsk's own
author and vet, but a working veterinary practice. Thirsk also
offers a good selection of shops, inns, tea rooms and quality takeaway
restaurants. This is wonderful walking country - footpaths from the
cottages lead to local villages and to the famous White Horse of
Kilburn a well known landmark carved out of chalk in a hillside near
the picturesque village of Kilburn.
The
horse is 314' long and about 228' high and was the work of Thomas
Taylor, a schoolmaster of Kilburn in 1857. The village of Kilburn is
also home to the famous 'Mouseman' oak furniture makers. You can

The
cottages are ideally situated for visiting the North Yorkshire
Moors, Dales and Coast and the famous historic walled city of York.
Within a short drive you will discover a wealth of places to visit,
suitable for all ages and tastes. There are many Stately Homes and
Gardens to enjoy nearby including - Castle Howard, Duncombe Park,
Beningborough Hall, Newburgh Priory, Newby Hall and Nunnington Hall. Monk
Park Animal Farm and Bird of Prey Centre is only 2 miles away and
well worth a visit, especially for younger visitors. The North Yorks Moors
Steam Railway is also well worth a visit as is the Eden Camp War Museum
at Pickering. Beautiful Wensleydale and Swaledale are about 20
minutes away.
Theme parks can be found at Lightwater Valley, Ripon, and Flamingo
Land , Kirbymoorside and are less than half an hour away. The
delightful city of York is about a 20 minute drive from the cottages
(using the very popular Park and Ride system) here you can
enjoy the many attractions including the famous York Minster, Yorvik
Centre, National Railway Museum, Castle Museum, Museum Gardens, Boat Trip on the River Ouse, Open Top Bus Tour or Horse Drawn Carriage
Tour around the City. You can now also take a ride on the recently
added 'York Eye'. Shopping is also a real treat in York with its
many quaint cobbled streets. Other local towns well worth visiting
are the Spa town of Harrogate with its fabulous Stray Gardens and
Harlow Carr Gardens, Helmsley which has its own castle, the pretty
market towns of Knaresborough and Northallerton. Walking, Riding,Golf, Fishing, Gliding,
Clay Pigeon Shooting, 4 x 4 Driving Experience and Horseracing
are all available within 10 minutes.
