Local Information

Excellent country pubs and restaurants can be found within 2 miles and just 4 miles away is the pretty market town of Thirsk, host to the World of James Herriot Visitor Attraction situated in Kirkgate, here you can step back in time to the days when this was not only home to Alf Wight, Thirsk's own author and vet, but a working veterinary practice. Thirsk also offers a wide selection of Shops,  Bakers, Butchers, Delicatessens, Supermarkets, Inns, Tea Rooms, Restaurants and Quality Takeaway Restaurants. The town also boasts a famous racecourse, a splendid cobbled market square and quaint alleyways awash with many individual shops. Market days held every Monday and Saturday.

For more detailed information on Thirsk, please visit www.visitthirsk.org.uk  also an excellent, informative website to visit with loads of information, attractions etc etc for the whole of Yorkshire is www.yorkshire.com

The cottages are situated in wonderful walking country, with many walks direct from your cottage door - one of our favourites is the walk to the White Horse of Kilburn, a gentle stroll across fields and tracks, approx 2 miles - passing through Kilburn Village, where you will find a lovely country pub together with the Mouseman Furniture Makers, Visitor Centre, Tea-Rooms and Gift Shop.

The White Horse is 314' long and about 228' high and was the work of Thomas Taylor, a schoolmaster of Kilburn in 1857, and on a clear day can be seen from miles around.

The cottages are ideally situated for visiting the North Yorkshire Moors, Dales and Coast and the famous historic walled city of York. Within a short drive you will discover a wealth of places to visit, suitable for all ages and tastes.
